The following is a list of commonly asked questions. If your question is not answered here please send us an e-mail, we will be happy to help.

Will a KIRKEY RACING seat fit my street stock or road car?

A KIRKEY RACING seat will fit in just about any race car. The only concern here is the placement of the roll cage, enough room should be allowed for the seat and cover. Sometimes a quick release steering wheel is required. KIRKEY RACING seats are not designed for street use in a road car.

How do I install a KIRKEY RACING seat?

How you install is really up to you; however we do recommend the following. One, that the seat be mounted to the roll cage or structural member of the frame. Two, that you bolt the seat in six places, four on the seat bottom and two just below the shoulder belt holes. We recommend against the use of stock sliders and adjusters as these can let go in a high impact crash. For entry level classes we do offer a mounting kit but a roll cage is required to use it. Be sure to check with your sanctioning body and /or track for their rules and regulations on seat installation. See INSTALLTION on our website for complete installtion instruction.

Which KIRKEY RACING seat should I choose?

The main question is how fast will you go? Hobby stock and entry level racers generally have slower speeds and may not require as much protection so an economy level seat may be just fine. A sprint car runs at mind numbing speeds so they need all the protection of the Open Wheel Full Containment seat. Late Models and other mid range classes should use an intermediate level seat. A rule of thumb, the faster you go the more protection you need. Our seats come in three main classes Oval Track, Drag Race and Road Race, you can then choose from a large selection of style. Personal preference is also a large factor in choosing your seats. In some cases, such as Sprint Cars or DIRT Modified, there is only one or two seats to choose from. We also offer specialty seats for Mini Cup, Mini Sprint, Quarter Midgets and Karts. Please remember to always purchase the best seat that your budget can afford.

How do I pick the right size of seat?

A KIRKEY RACING seat’s width is based on the width of your hips. Using only a straight edge ruler have the driver sit on a bench with legs hanging over the side. Measure the width of the hips through the center line of the body side to side. Do not measure across the lap of the driver as this will give a larger than required measurement. Take this measurement as the size of the seat you need. If it is 15” then you would order a 15” seat. If it is 15 ¾” go to a 16” seat. Note: some seats are only available in two or three sizes, in this case pick the next size up. (See the custom shop for more information on how to measure yourself)

What if I need to make a change to a KIRKEY RACING seat?

Whether you want to lower the ribs an inch or make a major modification, we can custom build any seat to your specifications. There is an additional cost for this. To order a custom seat we will need a completed custom order form (available on the website) and any special details written on paper and faxed to us (613-938-347). A hard copy of your information is the only way we will build a custom KIRKEY RACING seat. We strongly recommend against you modifying the seat after it has been purchased; this can compromise the strength and safety of the seat.

What kind of Cover can I get for my KIRKEY RACING seat?

Every KIRKEY RACING seat has a cover to match it and only the matching cover will fit. You do have a selection of colors, fabrics and striping to customize & personalize your cover. Standard colors include black, red and blue nylon, black vinyl, black, red, purple, grey and blue cloth. A fourth fabric type is Air Knit which comes in black, red, grey & blue. Custom colors and fabrics are slightly more expensive than standard ones. A center stripe can be added, at an additional charge, to the seat in any of the available colors & fabrics.

Can I still get a seat cover for my discontinued seat?

The best way to ensure that you get the correct replacement cover for your discontinued seat is to send us your old cover. From this we can make a new one. Sometimes if you have the part number for the old seat we can make a replacement, but the fit is not guaranteed. The cost for a discontinued cover is higher than a regular cover.

Can I get extra supports for my KIRKEY RACING seat?

KIRKEY RACING offers additional seat mountable supports and restraints for extra protection. Head, shoulder and leg supports are available and mount to any of our seats. If you are looking for added head and shoulder protection we also have restraint kits available. These supports offer increased protection and help reduce driver fatigue. Note: if you have a lightweight seat you will need to use a lightweight leg support. Drag seats do not normally use seat mountable supports.

Will my KIRKEY RACING seat accept different styles of safety belts?

Our standard seats are designed to be used with 5 point safety belts. The more advanced seats (47/53/56/58/63/66/67/68 series) will accommodate the 6 point belts. Regardless of the manufacturer these belts styles should work just fine. Always follow manufacturer directions for installing safety belts.

How much does a KIRKEY RACING seat weight?

An average Economy seat weighs 11lbs, Intermediates 13lbs and Deluxe 16lbs. The Sprint Lightweight and Layback Lightweight weight about 9lbs. Full Containment seats weight 18 to 26 lbs. Kart, Mini Cup & Mini Sprint seats weight about 11lbs while the Quarter Midget seat comes in at 6lbs.

How are KIRKEY RACING seats made?

All seat are made from 5052 grade aluminum which is then MIG and TIG welded. Within our product range we use .080”, .100” and .125” thick aluminum. I was in an accident and my KIRKEY RACING seat is bent, what should I do?

If the seat is bent, wrinkled, separated or in any way deformed then it should be replaced, the structure of the seat has been compromised. Using a seat that is deformed will only increase your risk of injury.

If I Powder Coat my KIRKEY RACING seat can I get replacement molding and foam?

Powder coating usually requires the removal of all plastic molding and foam pads from the seat. Once removed, they cannot be reused. You can buy these items directly from KIRKEY RACING. We also do in house powder coating in black or red.
